In the previous classes (1-5), we have studied the Ray of Creation in Decent, and in the following classes (7-14) we will study the Ray of Creation in Ascent. <\/p>\n

Today, after we discuss the Language of Symbolism (the Kabbalah or the \u2018Science of Signs\u2019), we are going to study a Historical or Scholarly Gnostic Text (the \u2018Hymn of the Pearl\u2019) and then we are going to study some of the foundations of the \u201cNew Science\u201d (the Great Work), as well as how to understand the concept of Free-Will (or the Reconciliation of Liberty & Necessity).\n<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is Kabbalah and Why Study it?<\/h3>\n

In the Prologue to Tarot & Kabbalah<\/em><\/a>, Samael Aun Weor says:
\n

\u201cThe objective of studying the Kabbalah is to enable us in the Superior Worlds.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

Krumm-Heller, in the final Lesson of his Course of Ario-Egyptian Kabbalah<\/em><\/a>, tells us that:<\/p>\n

\u201cKabbalah is \u2026 ‘the Science of correspondence’. Better said, ‘the science which teaches us how all things of this plane or world correspond to others things from the same womb<\/u> in the superior planes, most especially in the astral plane’.<\/p>\n

\u2026 KABBALAH is the knowledge of the PHYSICAL, the superlative knowledge of the METAPHYSICAL and the knowledge of correspondence between the two.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

And Eliphas Levi speaks on this subject as well:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn matters of religion, the science of the Kabbalah makes doubt impossible, because it (by itself) reconciles reason with faith by showing that the universal doctrine (which is formulated differently but is in the end always and everywhere the same) is the purest expression of the aspirations of the human spirit, illuminated by a necessary faith. <\/p>\n

It helps one to comprehend the usefulness of religious practices (which fortify one\u2019s willpower by fixing the attention), and it equally throws superior light upon all the various forms of worship. <\/p>\n

It proves that the most effective of all the forms of worship is whichever brings together (in some way) divinity and humanity, through effective signs, making humanity see, touch and in some way incorporate divinity into themselves<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Religion \u201c\u2026is high magic organized and regulated through symbolism and hierarchy. It is a combination of help offered to human weakness in order to establish one\u2019s willpower for the good.\u201d <\/dir><\/p>\n

So, let us begin by looking at what exactly the Science of the Kabbalah is\u2026<\/p>\n

The Science of the Kabbalah<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe High Science includes two things:
\n 1. speech or the verb,
\n 2. and the works which are the final form, or the complement of the verb.<\/dir><\/p>\n

The High Science thus has two fields:
\n

1. the science of speech<\/strong> which is related to the science of signs and of their initiatic correspondence:
\n 2. and the secret of the works<\/strong> (the final form or complement of the verb) which is related to the science of light and of fire.<\/dir><\/p>\n

The science of signs and their correspondences is the Kabbalah.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

Letters, Words, Actions and the Language of Nature & Light<\/h3>\n

Both Plato and Homer taught that \u201cLanguage has not been an arbitrary creation…\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

All Initiates know this sacred dialect. The mission of all Initiates is to trace, little by little, the path to where it can be found again. All initiation is about the re-conquest of this supreme language. <\/p>\n

\u2026In this language, the connection, the road and the communication with the invisible worlds is established. In this language and writing of light is the synthesis of all of the intellectual and physical mysteries. <\/p>\n

The ways to obtain this language of light are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n \u2022 Faith.
\n     \u2022 Knowledge of oneself.
\n         \u2022 Childlikeness.
\n            \u2022 Modesty.

The Language of the Consciousness<\/h3>\n

\u201cAll of nature’s laws exist within ourselves and if we do not discover them in our interior, we will never discover them outside of ourselves.<\/p>\n

The Human Being is contained in the Universe and the Universe is contained in the human being.<\/p>\n

What we experience within ourselves is real, because only the consciousness can experience reality.<\/p>\n

The language of the consciousness is symbolic, intimate, profoundly significant and only those who are awake can understand it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whoever wants to awaken the consciousness, must eliminate all the undesirable elements which constitute the Ego, the “I”, the Myself, from within; because the Essence is bottled therein.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

The Gnostic Legend of \u201cThe Hymn of the Pearl\u201d or \u201cThe Hymn of the Robe of Glory\u201d<\/h3>\n

Read the story<\/a> (see the section “The Hymn of Judas Thomas the Apostle in the country of the Indians.”). <\/p>\n

Here are some points of interest in the Legend:
\n       \u2022 Eating the \u201cfood\/drink\u201d of \u2018Egypt\/Earth\u2019 causes us to fall into a deep Forgetfulness\/Sleep (first 2 states of Consciousness) about our Spiritual Purpose
\n       \u2022 When we become tired or sad in this world, we can take advantage of those emotions to call out to our Divine Parents for help who can send us a \u201cletter\/message\u201d which can help us to remember our Spiritual Purpose
\n       \u2022 The Pearl as the Treasure of the Consciousness (third and fourth State of Consciousness)
\n       \u2022 The Robes as the Superior Existential Bodies of the Beings
\n       \u2022 The Serpent\/Dragon lives in the Ocean\/Water (the Sexual Waters)
\n       \u2022 Singing or Enchanting the Dragon\/Serpent as a use of Speech\/Mantrams
\n       \u2022 Returning to the Divine Realm by accomplishing one\u2019s Mission or Duty<\/p>\n

Note what Samael Aun Weor says in Arcanum 8 of Tarot & Kabbalah<\/em><\/a>:
\n

\u201cTHE SERPENT OR SAVING LOGOS INSPIRES MAN BY RECOGNIZING HIS IDENTITY WITH THE LOGOS AND THUS RETURNS HIM TO HIS PROPER ESSENCE, WHICH IS HIS LOGOS.<\/p>\n

The Sacred Serpent or Savior Logos sleeps coiled within\u2026, mystically lying in wait; awaiting the instant of being awakened.<\/p>\n

KUNDALINI, the Igneous Serpent of our Magical Powers, is coiled within the Magnetic Center of the coccyx (the base of the spinal column) and shines like a flash of lightning.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

This story is a Symbolic explanation about reconnecting with our true purpose, our reconnection with the Divine. One of the things that is this brings up is the idea of Liberty and the question of Free-Will. Because in Gnosis our Free-Will should be understood, and it should be understood in terms of its relationship to our Duty to God.<\/p>\n

 <\/a><\/p>\n

The Human Being’s Right to do his\/her Duty<\/h3>\n

\u201c\u2026Voltaire\u2019s last words were this contradictory formula: GOD AND LIBERTY.<\/p>\n

God, that is to say, a supreme master: that which excludes every idea of liberty, as the school of Voltaire understood it. And liberty, that is to say an absolute independence of any master, which excludes any idea of God.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

But we must see things differently if we are going to comprehend this concept. So let us redefine these terms:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe word GOD expresses the supreme personification of law, and consequently of duty; and if, by the word LIBERTY, one is willing to agree with us, that it is THE RIGHT TO DO ONE\u2019S DUTY, then we (in our turn) will take it as a motto, and we shall repeat, without contradiction and without error: GOD AND LIBERTY.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince there is no liberty for the human being except in the order which results from the true and the good, one may say that the conquest of liberty is the great work of the human soul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Man, by freeing himself from his evil passions and their servitude, creates himself (in a way) a second time.<\/p>\n

Nature made him living and suffering; but he makes himself happy and immortal: he thus becomes the representative of divinity upon earth<\/u> and exercises the almighty power relatively.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

The Human Being’s Duty to God and to Him or Herself<\/h3>\n

\u201c\u2026A God without humanity or a humanity without God can not constitute a religion. Those who wish to annihilate the human verb blaspheme, like those who deny the divine verb. <\/p>\n

The autonomy of man is necessary to his divine binomial.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To really merit or deserve something from God, one must obey God. But to obey God one must have an independent will<\/strong>. The slave does not obey, he undergoes.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

<\/a>The Development of the Human Being\u2019s Willpower<\/h3>\n

So, then, how can one conquer oneself and subdue nature? <\/p>\n

Through willpower!<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman life and its innumerable difficulties have as their goal, in the order of eternal wisdom, the education of the human being’s willpower.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The human being\u2019s dignity consists in doing what he wills, and in willing the good, in accordance with the science of the true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018Great Work\u2019 is \u2026 the creation of the true human being by one\u2019s own individual efforts, based on conscious works and voluntary sufferings. The \u2018Great Work\u2019 is the inner conquest of oneself, of our true liberty in God.<\/p>\n

Therefore, if (in reality) we want the perfect emancipation of our Willpower, then we need, with maximum and unavoidable urgency, to disintegrate all those “I\u2019s” [Egos or Psychological Defects] that live in our interior.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The \u201cGreat Work\u201d, Willpower and Freeing the Essence<\/h3>\n

\u201cNicholas Flammel and Raymond Lull were both meager men, yet they liberated their will and accomplished innumerable psychological prodigies that caused astonishment.<\/p>\n

Agrippa never progressed past the first part of the \u201cGreat Work\u201d and he lamentably died while struggling in the disintegration of his “I\u2019s” with the objective of possessing himself and establishing his independence.<\/p>\n

The perfect emancipation of the willpower assures the sage absolute dominion over [the Philosophical Elements of] Fire, Air, Water and Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnquestionably, many pseudo-occultists wish they could \u2026 have the same powers, however, this is more than impossible as long as the willpower continues to be bottled up in each and every one of those “I\u2019s” which we carry within the depths of our psyche.<\/p>\n

The Essence, engrossed in the “myself”, is the Genie of Aladdin\u2019s lamp, wishing for liberty… Once the Genie is free, it can accomplish miracles.<\/p>\n

The Essence is “Conscious-Willpower”, unfortunately processing itself in virtue of our own conditioning.<\/p>\n

When our willpower is liberated, then it blends or fuses itself with the Universal Willpower. Thus, as an outcome of this, when integrated like this, our willpower becomes sovereign. The individual willpower fused with the Universal Willpower can accomplish miracles\u2026\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

Liberating the Willpower<\/h3>\n

Eliphas Levi explains to us how to use our Willpower (Volition) in his books:
\n

\u201cWhat is willed with persistence is done. Every real will is confirmed by acts; every will confirmed by an act is an action.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHuman volition realized through action is like a cannon-ball and never recedes before an obstacle.\u201d <\/dir><\/p>\n

Samael Aun Weor clarifies this related with what we have been studying:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are three types of actions:
\n1. Those which correspond to the Law of Accidents [related with Psychological Sleep];
\n2. Those which belong to the Law of Recurrence [related with Karma], actions always repeated in each existence;
\n3. and actions which are intentionally determined by the Conscious Willpower.<\/dir><\/p>\n

Unquestionably, only persons who have liberated their willpower through the death of the “myself” (the Ego or “I”) will be able to accomplish new acts born from their free will.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The normal acts of humanity are always either the result of the Law of Recurrence or the mere product of mechanical Accidents.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

\u201cTo completely comprehend the bases and modus operandi of the Law of KARMA is indispensable in order to orient the ship of our life through the different levels of life in a positive and edifying manner.<\/p>\n

Karma is the Law of Compensation, not of vengeance. <\/p>\n

There are those who confuse this Cosmic Law with determinism and even fatalism, to the point of believing that everything that happens to man in life is determined beforehand. <\/p>\n

It is true that the actions of men determine Heredity, Education and Environment. <\/p>\n

However, it is also true that man has free-will and can change his actions; refine his character, create superior habits, overcome weaknesses, strengthen virtues, etc.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

\u201cWhosoever truly possesses free will can originate new circumstances. <\/p>\n

Whosoever has their willpower bottled up in the pluralized “I” (the Ego, the “myself”) is a victim of circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one can arrive at “Real Illumination” nor exercise the absolute Priesthood of Conscious Willpower, if they have not first radically died in themselves here and now.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

We must free the Willpower<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe exercise of powers is possible when the marvelous power of the will is radically liberated.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, since the willpower of people is absorbed in each “I”, obviously their willpower is divided into multiple wills that process themselves in virtue of their own conditioning.<\/p>\n

It is clear to comprehend that each “I” possesses its own particular, unconscious will.<\/p>\n

The innumerable wills engrossed in the “I\u2019s” frequently clash with each other, making them impotent, weak, and miserable, victims of circumstances, and are incapable, due to that very reason.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

The Development of Real Faith<\/h3>\n

In order to free the willpower from the “I”, we need to understand our situation and how we can change it\u2026 This is where the Kabalah helps us to see (in a metaphorical or allegorical way) how to accomplish this goal of achieving true liberation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kabalah, or traditional science of the Hebrews, could be called the mathematics of human thought. <\/p>\n

It is the algebra of faith. It resolves all the problems of the soul like equations, by extracting the unknowns. <\/p>\n

It gives to ideas the clarity and rigorous exactitude of numbers; its results are infallibility for the mind (relative, every time, to the sphere of human knowledge) and profound peace for the heart.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

By understanding the structure of the universe and the Archetypal energies that interact with each other then we can necessarily determine how to change our situation. But in order to truly do this, we actually have to experience the universe and these energies for ourselves.<\/p>\n

So, for now, we are learning about these things theoretically. Once we take these theories and put them into action, then we will begin to experience these things directly. This is how we can develop real FAITH. And this is why Samael Aun Weor says:<\/p>\n

\u201cFaith is the direct perception of the real; it is fundamental wisdom; it is the experience of that which is far beyond

Right now, we experience life through our senses and through our beliefs, prejudices, opinion, concepts, etc. So we need to do something in order to experience “the real”. <\/p>\n

This ‘something’ is a key in order to access the superior worlds and includes the practices given in the Gnostic Teachings: meditation, vocalization, prayers, invocations, as well as other techniques and methods. <\/p>\n

By implementing these practices into our lives we establish a devotional attitude<\/u> which changes the way we perceive our lives and therefore also changes our experience. <\/p>\n

So now we can understand why Eliphas Levi says:
\n

\u201cFaith proves itself and establishes itself through absolute devotion.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

So Faith is direct experience of “the real” which manifests itself through our actions (our works).

\u201cMy brothers, what is the gain if anyone says he has faith, but he does not have works? Is the faith able to save him? <\/p>\n

But if a brother or a sister is naked and may be lacking in daily food, and any one of you say to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, but does not give them the things the body needs, what gain is it? <\/p>\n

So also faith, if it does not have works, is dead being by itself.\u201d<\/dir><\/p>\n

Faith without works (actions or doing<\/em>) is dead. <\/p>\n

Remember that “the verb is begun with letters”, but it too is “achieved with acts<\/u>“.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

This is why we have faith in someone who keeps their word<\/em>, because their behavior has shown us that their word (or verb) is accomplished: they do what they say<\/em>.<\/p>\n

So we must seek to experience “the real” in order to establish authentic faith within ourselves. In this way we can begin to have direct knowledge of all the subjects discussed in Gnosis and then these teachings will be more than just concepts.<\/p>\n
